What Size Dumpster Do I Need? 15 vs. 20 vs. 30 vs. 40 Yard

Picking the right dumpster size is the single best way to keep your project on budget. Too small and you’re paying for a second haul. Too big and you’re paying for air. This guide breaks down each roll-off size Curry Disposal offers so you can choose with confidence.

First, what does “yard” mean?

Dumpster sizes are measured in cubic yards of volume. One cubic yard is a 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft cube. A typical full-size pickup bed holds about 2 to 3 cubic yards of loose debris, which is a handy way to picture each size.

15 yard dumpster: the small-project workhorse

The 15 yard is our smallest roll-off and the right pick for most homeowner projects. It fits comfortably in a standard driveway and handles a garage cleanout, a single-room remodel or yard-project debris without wasted space. If you were searching for a 10 yard dumpster, the 15 yard is usually the better value. See 10-Yard vs. 15-Yard Dumpster.

The 20 yard dumpster is the sweet spot for remodels. It has the same low walls as the 15 yard, so loading heavy items is easy, but with more floor space. It’s a top choice for kitchen and bath remodels, carpet and flooring removal, and many residential roofing jobs.

30 yard dumpster: for big cleanouts and construction

Taller walls give the 30 yard a lot more capacity in the same footprint. Contractors use it for additions, new home construction and full-house cleanouts, such as moving out of a long-time family home or preparing a property for sale.

40 yard dumpster: maximum capacity

The 40 yard is built for high-volume, lighter debris: commercial cleanouts, large demolition and big construction sites. Because it’s so tall, it works best for bulky material rather than very heavy debris like concrete or dirt.

Three tips for choosing the right size

  1. Estimate, then size up. Most people underestimate debris volume. If you’re between two sizes, the bigger one is usually cheaper than a second haul.
  2. Think about weight, not just volume. Shingles, concrete, brick and dirt get heavy fast. A smaller container is often the better choice for heavy materials. Ask us before you order.
  3. Measure your space. Allow room for the container plus clearance for our truck to back in and set it down. Check for overhead wires and low branches.
